Robe Garage

The True History of the Robe Garage

Mr SW Hann obtained the block of land on which the Robe Shell Garage now stands, for the sum of £15. In 1926 he had the garage built. It was leased to Mr Bill Drew. Then Mr Frank Squire leased the business. The garage was then extended in 1935, whereby it was leased to Mr Ken Gurry and Mr Hancock. Mr Tom Lomax leased it for a while. After a few years Mr Roy Norgate purchased it in 1950 for the sum of £1,200. Later it was sold to Neil Beard and Ken Cropp. The next owner was an Alan and Elva Loveday, who sold it to Keith Humphry’s and then Robin Vearing bought it and sold it to Monfries and Burchell, who had the building demolished and the new one erected. The original house was erected in 1946 consisting of two mess huts from Loveday Camp.
