| Unclaimed
Letters listed in the Border Watch February 1864 |
|
| Transcribed
by Lucy Thompson |
|
|
| Post
offices were frequently located in businesses and not in a special building
in the smaller areas in the country. |
| The
post master may have been a very part time position in some areas. |
|
| If
the mail was not collected after a fixed time (it varied according to
location) the letters were deemed as uncollected. |
| A
list was posted on the wall to alert people of unclaimed letters |
|
| The
local newspaper would also post the list for all the areas within the readership area |
|
| Then
the list would be published in the Government Gazette in the event that the
listed person had moved on. |
|
| If
the letters remained unclaimed after a fixed period usually 6 months they
were destroyed. |
