SEFHG Portland OutingDate: Sunday 11th April Visiting: Historic Buildings Walk – over 200 historic buildings from the 1800’s remain in the Portland CBD. This 2 hour unguided walk commences at the Customs House in Cliff Street, where car parking is available, and showcases 48 buildings. Immigration Wall on the north wall of the Ploughed Field, in Bentick Street opposite the Hospital, which we can visit on our walk. These two bluestone walls hold memorial plaques donated by descendants of those immigrants who first set their feet on Australian soil at Portland, Victoria. Portland Social History Museum. Portland’s social history is on display in “History House”, the former Portland Town Hall built in 1863 in Cliff Street. Open 10.00am-12 noon and 1.00pm-4.00pm The core display looks chronologically at the history of the region from the indigenous inhabitants to the arrival of Europeans and subsequent establishment of a settlement in Portland Bay. The displays focus on various aspects of the Portland story, including the achievements of the Henty Brothers; and Portland Bay as the site of an influx of assisted immigration to Australia in the 1850s. Meet: 10.00am (Eastern Standard Time) at the Portland Town Hall in Cliff Street. The timing for what we do will depend on the weather. Bring: Your own food and drink or you may plan to purchase it in Portland on the day. We will aim to have a lunch hour from 12.00-1.00pm. (EST) Travel: You can make your own way to Portland, but if you would like a ride, or are willing to take someone else with, you please let one of the committee know. There will be meeting places in Millicent (SEFHG resource centre) and Mt Gambier (Public Library carpark) for those requiring a ride. We will aim to begin our tours at 10.00am (EST) but may arrive in Portland by 9.30am (EST) to have a reviving cuppa before we begin. RSVP: Numbers for the Museum visit need to be known, so please let a committee member know if you intend to join us for the day.
